Dear Readers,
This issue includes some of the events that didn’t make it into previous issues due to limited time, space or budget. I wish I could say that we have printed all the “seen” images from events past but there is so much that goes on here in the Ancient City that we just don’t make it to everything. I personally missed the Council on Aging Fashion Show (get more details on page 4). I get the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people at these events and take in all that is shared about the magazine. The greatest compliment is when folks say that they read it from cover-to-cover. And those priceless compliments go to all the contributors who dedicate their time and share their ideas. All comments and suggestions are invited, so please log on to our web site or send an email. I would love to hear from you.

Back to the events, I just want say kudos to all those who make these events happen. We are very blessed to have such a loving and giving community. Some of these people dedicate their lives to making others’ lives here more fulfilling. At a glance it may seem as though we are a publication that features the hottest parties in town. But please be aware that the events we cover are for charitable fund-raisers, not for profit events, our advertisers’ celebrations and new business. If you haven’t already, won’t you please become a subscriber and support your City magazine?

Until next issue, I wish you Peace and Blessings,
Yvette Monell, Publisher

Dear Readers,

There is something about catching a glimpse of a pod of dolphins frolicking in the Matanzas that makes you wish the Bridge of Lions would stay up a little longer. “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” Reads the profound bumper sticker, strategically placed, just under the Jesus Fish up ahead. The simplicity of the thought truly brings a smile to my face and puts my heart at ease. What was my hurry and what are You trying to tell me? Seems as though the more focused I am on my plan the more complicated things tend to get. I’m not complaining. Each day is an adventure and with every new day I feel that the journey has just begun. Waking up to my own animals and all that is nature always puts things into perspective.

In this issue we touch on the Amazing Animals of St. Johns County. From wildlife to rescue this is only a sample of all that thrives here. Animals bring so much to our lives. Often times they are there for us when no one else seems to be…there waiting to be fed, walked, cleaned-up after, and providing that unconditional love that only a best friend has to offer.

Now more than ever before I urge you to get out and enjoy all that is wild about life. It seems as though I’m always talking about how we need to support our local small businesses. When was the last time you embarked on a sunset cruise? Ever? Check out St. Augustine Sailing or rent a boat from Cast and Cruise. The time is now to try wind surfing before you die and Anastasia Water Sports can help you with all the details. Not crazy about being on the water. Take a Segway with Tours by The Sea. Breath in the ocean, indulge in all its bounty and support our local fishermen by buying the freshest local catch at the Seafood Shoppe. While you’re on the island don’t forget the wine. Stop by Tim’s Wine Market for the perfect pairing to go with your catch.

Make today the day to be even a bit kinder to a stranger and all those who visit here. Be kind to yourself.
Pray for our Troops. Pray for our Waters and Shores. Pray for our Country.

Peace and Blessings,
Yvette Monell, Publisher

Dear Readers,

Home & Garden is one of my very favorite topics and favorite issues to compile. There is so much happening around town and so much more that we would have loved to cover. It seems as though we are always a bit short on time, help and budget but somehow we manage to pull it all together.

Our goal is to increase our subscription base by an additional 5,000 readers over the next 90 days. Please help by telling a friend or simply sharing your issue with someone who hasn’t yet seen the magazine. Our paid readership is valuable not only to help with our mailing and production costs, but those who subscribe know they have contributed to the creation of their City magazine. This is my life’s work so I hope that you take pride in knowing that you are an important part of something special. It’s a great time to renew your subscription—thank you!

I received such nice comments on my Facebook page for my new headshot that I thought I’d use it in the magazine. Michael thinks it’s a good idea for me to have my photo in the magazine because, “It helps readers realize that real people put the magazine together; put’s a face to it.” I’m kinda shy. I could have been like Oprah and put my mug on the cover for the past three and a half years, but it has taken me this long to find a picture that I actually like. The image was taken by my computer.

Peace and Blessings,

Dear Readers,

There are absolutely no excuses for you not to get out and enjoy the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival. The season for colds and flu is over, we are all feeling better. If allergies are your reason, go see Larry Layne at Healing Waters or Myra Shaeffer at The Earth House. They’ll hook you up with something all natural that will cure your suffering.
Back to the festival; From Friday, April 30 to Sunday, May 2, 2010 The Nation’s Oldest City streets will be filled with sound, excitement and the spirit of the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival. The level of talent that will perform from well known locals to internationally famous is destined to draw the crowds. The impact this event will bring to our area campgrounds, B&Bs, hotels, restaurants and shops will be remarkable.
The festival has become a local tradition with a twelve year history at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and last two years at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds. This year the St. Johns County Cultural Events Division and the City of St. Augustine have teamed up with the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival to organize a City wide event. We are grateful to those who had the knowledge and vision to be bringing such an event that entire families will come out to St. Augustine to enjoy. There is a complete schedule of performances and activities for the festival that starts on page 52.
I get emails and comments from readers who say they read their issues of Old City Life from cover to cover. I have to say that’s something that I never tire of hearing! In this issue I am suggesting that all the readers turn to page 14 and read through to 16.

Peace and Blessings,
Yvette Monell, Publisher

Dear Readers,

So sorry if this issue is a few days late. Anyone troubled or effected by the timeliness will be happy to know that I will receive my punishment. A warrant has been issued for my arrest, I will soon be locked-up! They are coming to arrest me on March 25th. I will be put in jail for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Annual St. Augustine Lock-Up. You are welcome to come by The White Room and gloat while I’m behind bars working on raising my $3,200 bail. The bail money raised goes towards local families, adults and children that have neuromuscular diseases. You are more than welcome to write a check to MDA today, put my name in the memo space (Yvette Monell) and mail it to: MDA, 6900 Southpoint Drive North, Suite 400, Jacksonville, FL 32216.

A great big Thank You to all our new and renewed subscribers. If you haven’t already sent in your subscription please do so before the 25th and I will donate half the cost to MDA. Those checks, for $20, should be sent to the magazine: P.O. Box 3484, St. Augustine, FL 32085. And sure, you can put in some extra!

I’m very pleased to welcome the St. Augustine Independent Restaurant Association (SAiRA) to the magazine. You’ll find an informative and useful dining guide starting on page 26 as well as profiles, highlights and events. Please let the participating restaurants know you appreciate their contributing to your City magazine.

Peace and Blessings,

Dear Readers,

After sorting through thousands of images, this issue features the last of the holiday season events. So please don’t be confused when you see all the smiling faces surrounded by Christmas trim. While you do hate to see the downtown lights go, it makes for a refreshing change and the assurance that Spring is almost here.

In this issue the focus is on love and weddings. Just about every writer who contributed this month said something about how great St. Augustine is for locations. The Oldest City is a destination wedding city and we have only scratched the surface. While you will find lots of helpful and very valuable information in these pages, it is only a smidgin of what’s available here. And if you are planning a wedding, in addition to Old City Life Magazine, you must get yourself a copy of Real Simple Weddings 2010. The guide really helps simplify and put things into focus. If you know someone who is planning to get married, please pass this issue on to them. Especially out-of-towners who might consider getting married here or would consider our Ancient City for their honeymoon.

Have nothing to do with the whole love thing? You’ll still find your favorite articles and personalities. Please write to me and let me know how you think we’re doing. The type of stories and focuses you want to see more of. Tell us about your up-coming event. I need to hear your comments and suggestions. Again, I must urge you to become a subscriber if you haven’t already. The complimentary issues around town will soon be in limited supply.

Peace and Blessings,
