A World of Fashion
Feminine yet sensible; modern yet approachable; comfortable yet chic-all these words can be used to describe the fashions of international designer Alexandra Ni. Ni draws from her family’s cross-cultural influence for her chic urban attire to produce a line which combines style and comfort for the modern woman — European flair and Asian sensibilities come together in a harmonious way, making her limited edition and one-off, hand-made pieces a must for any couture wardrobe.
It could be said that Ni was born to be a fashion designer, as both her mother and aunt were dressmakers. From them, she learned her appreciation for fine fabrics and expert craftsmanship, evident in her all of her creations. Ni uses only high-quality natural fabrics in all of her originals and her style reflects her down-to-earth, artisanal approach to fashion.
Ni’s also relies heavily on her exposure to a multi-cultural, multinational world throughout her life. Born in South Soviet Kazakstan in 1984 to a Siberian mother and Korean father, she started designing\ her own clothes at the age of 13. As a college student, she studied History of World Culture at St. Petersburg State] University of Culture and Arts, earning her degree there and then was off to Switzerland’s Fribourg University to study Cultural Anthropology.
Ni would end up in the world of Swiss private banking but was called back to her original calling and left to continue her formal education in fashion at the world-renowned Asmod International University of Art for Fashion. Along the way, she attended extensive courses at London’s legendary Central St. Martins School.
Paris, Zurich, Moscow, Oslo, London and …the First Coast
The Alexandra Ni label was founded in Berlin in 2012 and the designer re-located to Jacksonville shortly after. She chose theFirst Coast for her global launch and her collections hit the runaway for the very first time in November 5th, 2014.
Ni’s shares her success by giving back-she regularly contributes to local charities, has donated creations to various organizations in the area-one to Ponte Vedra’s Clean Water Music Fest and, for her first show, she collaborated with Rethread-a local organization which helps women victimized by the sex trade find a new life.
You can experience the fashions of this innovative and talented designer when they are showcased on the STAFW runway during Saturday evening’s show.
