A testament to the word ‘coquina’ and the forts constructed from the strong sedimentary rock, Coquina Law Group’s mission is to aggressively and professionally protect their clients and their businesses’ legal rights and interests. Unique in their diverse backgrounds in life and legal experience, the attorneys of Coquina Law Group are usually on the opposite legal side from the big attorneys you see in expensive televison ads and billboards.
Two major hurricanes bookended their first year in business. Established in October 2016, W. Ashby Underhill, Jeremiah Mulligan, and Jim Wilson are the three attorneys at Coquina Law Group. Katie Hutson, the office manager, according to Ashby, is the backbone of the firm.
Active in the local community, Coquina Law Group sponsors many local events and provides pro-bono legal services. Underhill is a candidate for St. Augustine Junior Service League, where he has fundraised over $7,000 to date. Mulligan volunteers for non-profits, EMMA, and Keepers of the Coast.
Underhill, a St. Augustine transplant from Louisiana, defends personal injury claims as well as insurance carriers. He applies his experiences from many different arguments and analysis skills in other legal practices. Visiting St. Augustine, while attending law school, he found his forever home here. He says, “The oak trees and laid-back atmosphere reminded me of Louisiana, and the people are amazing.”
Raised in Flagler Beach, Mulligan is a soccer coach and serves on the board of Ancient City Soccer. In the courtroom, he works with property related issues, including homeowners or condominium associations, sales and purchase disputes, property damage, and construction defect matters.
With over 35 years of experience, Jim Wilson practices government law, real estate law, and land use and zoning. The bulk of his career has been spent representing local governments. He is the former city attorney for St. Augustine, and the current city attorney for St. Augustine Beach.
The way Underhill sees it, Coquina Law Group is, “ready to defend your rights, just as the coquina walls of Castillo de San Marcos defended St. Augustine from attacks.”
